Candid portrait of a trans son (Flip Zonne Zuijderland) and his mother about his search for gender and identity and her response as a parent. A moving and hilariously honest film, based on the successful theater play with the same name. This screening has an after talk with moderator Kim Horsnell (Check-in Genderzorg), mother from the film Inez Derksen (artistic director off Laagland), and Arriënne Peters, a mother who is also in the film.

In With(out) balls we see a kid who’s becoming more and more clear and a confused mom who can barely keep up with him. Creating space for addressing the wrongs, concerns and clichés, this film provides a loving insight into the reality of a kid in transition. The film shows the impact that ‘becoming who you are’ has on a family, but at the same time addresses universal themes like growing up, becoming an adult and the art of raising a kid and letting them go. Not only for trans kids and their parents, but enriching for everyone.
The son is named Flip Zonne Zuijderland (1998) and is filmmaker (Selfmade Man) and actor (ANNE+, Goodbye Stranger). The mom is Inez Derksen (1967), artistic director of theater company Het Laagland. The theater version played in 2021 across the country, got so much response that making a film version to share this urgent story with an even wider audience, was inevitable.
