The documentary MAJOR! won the Audience Award for best feature film at our festival in 2017. Afterwards we showed the documentary at several festivals and occasions. We get the same reaction everywhere: more people need to hear this story. That is why we are very happy that we can screen this audience favorite this year at Buiten De Binary in Nijmegen. According to visitors in 2017, one of our best films ever. The film is introduced by TranScreenie Cyd!

MAJOR! tells about the life and struggle of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a 73-year-old black transgender activist who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for forty years. Miss Major is a veteran of the Stonewall uprising, a survivor of Attica State Prison, a former sex worker, a community leader and human rights activist. Her personal story is intertwined with the LGBT struggle for justice and equality from the 1960s to today.
We also showed this documentary in 2017. Following this screening, there was a panel discussion on the topic ‘Intersectionality in the Trans* Community’. Intersectionality can be explained as the intersection of different identities and forms of oppression that come together in one person. In Miss Major’s case, both the fact that she is black and the fact that she is trans* are important parts of her identity. Entwined together, these cause the oppression and struggles she experiences every day.
