Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th January, we screened the beautiful and empowering film ‘Kokomo City’ at the Rainbow House in collaboration with the Kiki House of Bodega.
On Saturday we had a closed event for the community of Queer To Support. We screened Kokomo City after a vogue workshop by Luluh from the House of Bodega.
After the screening, a paneltalk with Samira Hakim and Dinah Bons from Trans United Clinic, Khareem Bodega – Dutch father of house of Bodega NL, Michael Lubbers – Father of House of Elle and Camiel Welling – doctor of the Trans United Clinic gave room for questions from the audience as for stories of their own experiences.
Dinah Bons wrote on Instagram about this day:
“In the heart of Amsterdam, a day to remember unfolded, where the vibrant pulse of the African LGBTIQ community was felt by all. The House of Bodega and Trans United Clinic with Doctor @camiel_doubleyou , alongside Queer Support and TranScreen, orchestrated an event that was more than just a gathering – it was a celebration of identity, courage, and community.‘ …
‘Kokomo City’ wasn’t just a movie; it was a mirror reflecting the intertwined emotions and experiences of many, sparking conversations that bore the fruit of understanding and reflection. …
It’s in these moments, surrounded by the warmth of the Ballroom community with Queens like @jademugler and Luluh Bodega , the trans bpoc, and the sex worker community, that we realize the power of unity. To create a haven where individuals are empowered to embrace their true selves is not just an act of service; it’s an act of love.”
On Sunday the event was organized for the Dutch Ballroom scene. After a energetic workshop by Luluh Bodega, we screened the movie Kokomo City again. Afterwards we had a panel with Sunny Jansen – pr spokes person of Daily Paper, March Bannor – from the Rainbow House, Jade Mugler and Khareem Bodega – from the House of Bodega, Jojo Mugler and Camiel Welling.
People called the film impressive, recognizable, and deeply moving and were really thankful they got the opportunity to watch this movie and talk about it afterwards.
Thank you for everyone who made these days possible. Those who were part of this day and thank you for sharing your stories with us.
Futhermore, we would like to thank Peggy Gemerts of fullcolor-ent.com and Nushin Naini from periscoopfilm.nl for making it possible for us to show this film for free to our community.
